UN Sounds Alarm Over Cuba’s Fuel Crisis
At a press briefing, the spokesperson highlighted that the UN General Assembly has repeatedly urged for the removal of “the embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba,” stressing that the Secretary-General hopes all sides will engage in peaceful discussions and uphold international legal norms.
He also noted that UN teams present in Cuba are collaborating with the authorities to bolster humanitarian assistance for the Cuban population, as the island grapples with mounting hardships.
Cuba’s fuel emergency has intensified after Washington halted oil shipments from its long-standing partner Venezuela, which previously delivered tens of thousands of barrels daily. This interruption came in the wake of a U.S. operation that apprehended former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and confiscated oil tanker vessels, effectively stopping key fuel imports.
The worsening energy shortfall has fueled broader concerns about the basic needs of Cuban citizens, with other international reports underscoring the risk of a severe humanitarian breakdown if fuel supplies are not restored.
